I was honored to paint a mural for Arcade Lancaster, the new arcade bar opening up at the Chameleon club in Lancaster Pa this week. This project is by far the largest and most involved I have worked on to date and I'm super happy to share it with you. This is my first mural so naturally I started by binging on YouTube videos of some of my favorite muralists. There's a lot you can learn from watching someone work and mural painting is a great example of that. I got the scoop on the best materials and processes to use from some great artists and decided to just go with it.
The request was a mural of classic video game characters in a more creepy, adult style. I started with sketches on the iPad and drew up about 15 characters to see what ideas I could come up with to warp them into my style. Just as any other creature I create, I went for something interesting and unsettling with a lot to look at.
Once all the characters were drawn and detailed, the next step was to arrange them so that they were spaced out properly. Luckily, technology was on my side and I was able to come up with a master copy that had all my colors mapped out and characters in place. The colors were picked by the guys opening the bar and I decided to work with 4 colors ranging dark to light.
In the beginning, I used an old overhead projector to put the characters up on the wall one by one, but unfortunately it chewed through two bulbs in a day. The club came to the rescue with a digital projector (next thing to add to my arsenal) and thankfully the project stayed on track for launch night.
This project took me about a week working afternoons into the evening to paint, not to mention sketching them out but it was all worth it. I'm incredibly happy to see it come to life on a wall. Not to mention all the nights as a teenager that I spent at the chameleon club seeing all the musicians I loved. I'm happy to leave my first mark on the city of Lancaster and hope to keep painting murals in the future. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this project including my amazing girlfriend who came to the rescue when my car died mid week as well. Also a huge thank you to Arcade Lancaster for asking me to add a centerpiece to their exciting new bar!
Come see the mural and enjoy a drink and some games at Arcade Lancaster at the chameleon club in Lancaster Pa. Now if you excuse me, I have a list of commissions for very patient people to get to. Take care for now.
